Section 01
Who we are
What The Lot is operated at whatthelot.com and covers land use, zoning, and development activity in the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia. We are not a government agency and this is not an official record of any jurisdiction.
For privacy questions, use our contact form and select the Privacy topic.
Section 02
What we collect
We collect three kinds of information:
- Account information — if you sign in, we store your email address, an optional display name, and any watchlists or alert preferences you create. This is only used to run features you signed up for.
- Messages you send us — the name, email address, subject, and body of anything you submit through the contact form or a tip form. We use this to reply and to keep a record of the exchange.
- Basic usage data — anonymous analytics through Google Analytics (page views, referrers, coarse device information), plus standard server logs (IP address, user-agent, timestamps) which are used to keep the site secure and prevent abuse.
We do not sell your data, we do not run ad networks, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.
Section 03
Public property records
Most of what you see on the site — parcels, zoning, permits, meeting agendas — comes from public GIS layers published by the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. That data is public record and is not personal data about you. See Data & sources for the exact feeds.
Section 04
How we use information
- To operate the site, keep it fast, and fix bugs.
- To send you alerts you explicitly subscribed to.
- To reply to messages you send us and follow up on tips.
- To detect and stop abuse, spam, and attacks.
We do not use your information for automated decision-making that affects your legal rights.
Section 05
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with a handful of vendors we rely on to run the site:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage.
- Lovable — hosting, deployment, and email delivery.
- Google Analytics — anonymous usage statistics.
We may also disclose information if we are required to by a valid legal process, or where necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of any person. We will not volunteer your information to law enforcement or other third parties without such a requirement.
Section 06
How long we keep it
Account data is kept for as long as you have an account, then deleted on request or after a period of inactivity. Contact-form messages are kept for our internal records — usually a few years — so we can pick up where a conversation left off. Server logs are rotated within a few weeks. Analytics data follows Google Analytics’ own retention settings.
Section 07
Your choices
- Access or delete your account — sign in and open Account, or email us using the contact form.
- Unsubscribe from alerts — every email includes an unsubscribe link.
- Opt out of analytics — browser-level tools such as Google’s opt-out add-on work here.
Section 08
Children
What The Lot is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information to us, let us know and we’ll delete it.
Section 09
Changes to this policy
We update this page when the site materially changes what it does or who it shares data with. The date at the top always reflects the last change. Meaningful changes will be announced on the site.
