Data &
Sources.

Last updated · July 9, 2026

The property, zoning, and permitting data on this site is public record. Here’s where it comes from, how we’d like you to cite it, and where the line between record and editorial sits.

Section 01

Primary sources

Every parcel, zoning designation, permit, and agenda item on the site is sourced from public GIS layers published by:

  • City of Harrisonburg — Community Development GIS services (parcels, zoning, permits, agendas).
  • Rockingham County, VA — County GIS services (parcels, zoning, land records).

Live source listing and last-sync times live at Data sources.

Section 02

What we add

What The Lot re-arranges, cross-references, and describes that public data in a way that’s easier to read than a raw GIS viewer. The layouts, editorial writing, category labels, aggregations, code, and design are our own.

The record is theirs. The presentation is ours.

Section 03

Freshness

We refresh source data on a regular schedule and stamp every page with the date of the last successful sync where relevant. Public GIS feeds sometimes lag, go down, or change format without warning — if something looks stale, check the source directly and let us know.

Section 04

Editorial disclaimer

The site is not an official record of any jurisdiction, not legal advice, not a real-estate listing service, and not a substitute for a professional. Do not rely on it for closing decisions, permit filings, litigation, or anything else with legal or financial consequences without verifying against the source of record.

Section 05

Citation & reuse

Journalists, researchers, and neighbours are welcome to cite the site. When you do, please:

  • Link to the specific page on whatthelot.com you’re citing.
  • Credit the underlying record to the jurisdiction that publishes it — the City of Harrisonburg or Rockingham County — not to us.
  • For extended reproduction of our editorial writing, layout, or visualisations, ask first. We’re usually happy to say yes.

Section 06

Corrections & takedowns

If a page is factually wrong, out of date, or something on the site identifies you personally in a way you’d like removed, send us a note under the Correction topic. We take corrections seriously and try to act within a few days.
